What's Cookin'?
in McLendon-Chisholm
Compiled by McLendon-Chisholm Ladies Auxiliary Fire Department
This is a 172-page, softcover, spiral-bound charity cookbook published in 1979 to benefit the members of the local Fire Department.
Now, if you look at the scan, you'll see that the cover says "McLendom"-Chisholm not "McLendon"-Chisholm. I'm 99.9% sure that this was a typographical error, as the name of the only town I know in the U.S. is McLendon-Chisholm, Texas.
I can only imagine how bummed out the Ladies were, after obviously working so hard to compile all these recipes, to get the copies back from the printer with a spelling error on the cover!
Anyway, McLendon-Chisholm is a very small town in Rockwall County, northeast of Dallas, east of Lake Ray Hubbard.
According to the History of Rockwall County written by O. L. Steger, Sr., McLendon-Chisholm began as two separate settlements, McLendon's and Chisholm, each of which was named for a prominent landowners in the early 1850s (P. A. McLendon and Enoch Parson Chisholm). In 1969, the two communities incorporated as one. By the time this cookbook was published, the population would have been about 480.
Flipping through the recipes, I found almost all cite contributors' names: Mrs. Joe D. Blankensopp, mother of Betsy Gentry; Virginia Denny (New Orleans Squash), Sandy Hansen, Fay Rodgers, Mrs. Mattie Mae Brown (Banana Cake), Charlotte Chupik (Self-Filled Cupcakes), Cloyce Bowen (49er Cake), Vernelle Crowell (Cola Cake), A. D. Hartman (Pound Cake), Daran Willmon from her grandmother, Dovie Burgess (Biscuit Pudding), Karan Willmon (Quick Soccer Evening Meal), Flo Smith (3 Soups Casserole), Bettye Meyers (Mexican Mix-Up). I picked these at random, there are lots, lots more!
